As mentioned on the home page, Wes was completely enthralled with Hudgens's book, "Drive Like Hell" . For fun, he took a stab at how he would like to have seen the cover of a paperback book. Up to that point, he had been holding out for Stephen King to ask him before he tried his hand at book covers, but since that didn't seem likely, Drive Like Hell was the only other book he has had the desire to represent as filtered through his own mind and hands. Fortunately he didn't have to kidnap Dallas and break his kneecaps before doing so. You don't even need to like racing to enjoy the book, and to call Drive Like Hell "a redneck classic" is doing it a disservice -- although it is that -- it is also much, much more. There's something there for everyone of any age & from any region to relate to, but even moreso if you're spent any time in the South, and Georgia in particular. The scene at The Varsity will leave your mouth watering, and nearly faint for lack of a milkshake and a fried peach pie. The folks here at Willard's Garage all got the same feeling from this book as we did from a lot of the Drive-by Truckers music, which is ironic, since Hudgens had not even heard the band until he was more than half-way finished writing the book. In fact, he told us that their music actually inspired him to finish it. Being his first novel, he had the same fears many first time authors suffer, one being that there wouldn't be an audience for what the ground he covered. After a friend persuaded him to listen to Southern Rock Opera, besides totally loving the DBT's music, he realized that they were covering much of the same ground he was, and people certainly liked them, so maybe....
